Bakhtiari

have a renowned reputation in the carpet market. Among the many types of Persian rugs is the Bakhtiari, which is famous for exquisite composition and long lasting qualities. Unique geometrical motifs and color combinations adorn these antique Bakhtiari carpets, providing its one of a kind style. History behind the Bakhtiari Rugs 

The Bakhtiari rugs were made by the tribe Bakhtiar, also known as Bakhtiari. They resided in the cold snowy Zagros Mountains of Iran. The rugs woven were primarily crafted by the villagers and nomads who lived in those areas. While they originally started with geometrical patterns, they were exposed to the floral designs of other Persian rugs. Inspired, they created a unique fusion by blending the two and forming a design of their own for which the Bakhtiari rugs are now famous for. The weavers were so experienced and knowledgeable they created their own dyes, blending them into hues that are unlike any other.

These tribal rugs were not available for export until the 1930s. They were only made for tribal purposes and commission work around some parts of Persia. In the present day, these ancient rugs are finally available for sale.

Materials and Texture
The pile for Bakhtiari rugs is made of quality wool. The looms used a cotton weft and warp, with the weft sometimes utilizing a combination of two colors. The knots composing these rugs are extremely detailed work—in turn, these rugs can take an immense amount of time to finish. Some commission work for palace sized rugs took around six years.

The wool used in the pile for these Persian Bakhtiari are beaten firm after finishing, causing them to grow thick, solid, and thoroughly durable.

Weaving Techniques
Bakhtiari rugs are usually composed symmetrical knots. They have a knot density ranging from 15,000 to 32,000 knots per meter. Like all carpets, the higher the count of knot density, the higher the quality of rug.  The primary reason for the Bakhtiari’s pristine craft is due to the heavy work done in each carpet.

Colors and Designs
The colors commonly used in antique Bakhtiari rugs are mainly vibrant colors like green, blue, brown, and dark tones of red. The designs in these rugs were primarily geometrical patterns with floral and detailed pattern work within the body frame. The designs are commonly found to have trees like a cypress or willow trees. Every pattern is followed by another one in a different color to complementing one another.
